It feels like everywhere you look someone is trying a meal kit. I see them all over Instagram and even saw one on my neighbour’s doorstep last week.
My partner and I had been looking for easy solutions to start saving money on food. We both cook but only know a few staple recipes that we’re bored of.
Sure, we could learn some new ones, but who has the time to research, find ingredients, prep, and cook every single night?! We usually end up eating out or getting takeout most nights, which is convenient, but not great for our bank accounts!
Could a meal kit be a solution? They seemed kind of complicated and I assumed they’d be expensive, so I asked my neighbor what she thought of it. She told me she uses Chefs Plate, Canada’s most affordable meal kit, and she couldn’t recommend it enough!
Since she mentioned it’s affordable I decided to look into Chefs Plate. Turns out their meals start at just $8.99 each. Compared to what we were spending on take-out, this was nothing.
The Chefs Plate subscription is completely flexible and we could pause or cancel at any time, so we gave it a shot.
We were seriously impressed with the huge variety of meals they offer. They have a plan for Vegetarians, a Meat & Vegetable plan, and a Family Friendly plan. They offer 15 different menu options every week including lots of different global cuisines. With tasty classics like Chicken Parmesan and Meatloaf, and experimental options like Spicy Korean Beef Tacos and Za’atar Pork Burgers.

We went with the Meat & Veggie Plan for 2 people, 4 nights a week, and chose our meals (which was hard because they all sounded so delicious).
Our delivery arrived right on time and we couldn’t wait to get into it. First up was Spicy Sausage Arrabiata with Penne Pasta. The ingredients are all pre-portioned and each meal has its own recipe card so there’s zero guesswork involved. It was my turn cooking dinner (my partner and I decided to take it in turns).
I was shocked when it was ready in 30 minutes, just like the recipe card said, and it was TO DIE FOR. We don’t eat pasta much, but this tasted amazing. Next up, my partner cooked Shawarma-Spiced Beef and Golden Rice with homemade garlic sauce. It took 15 minutes! I was so happy because I was starving and it hit the spot.
The rest of our first week with Chefs Platewas no different. Each meal was restaurant-quality, but super easy to cook thanks to their easy-to-follow recipe cards and pre-portioned ingredients.
My favourite meal of the week was Homestyle Beef Burgers with potato wedges and onion jam– SO yummy! My partner’s favorite was the Chicken Pozole with sour cream, a dish we would have never attempted to cook if it wasn’t for Chefs Plate!
Not only has Chefs Plate given us a new activity to enjoy as a couple, but it’s given us convenience. We’re saving money we’d spend on eating out, but having just as much fun learning how to cook new recipes for ourselves and each other!
I can’t believe I even questioned whether Chefs Plate would be worth it. They make dinner time a breeze by dropping pre-portioned ingredients to your doorstep plus recipe cards every week– you’ll never have to think about what you want for dinner. The ingredients are fresh and the menu is always changing, so you’ll never get bored!
