There’s no formula on how to be the most efficient food shopper. Some people prefer to bring lists when they go to the grocery store while others prefer to wing it. While a list might keep you organized and on budget, it doesn’t always save time.
If you’ve been to a big-box store recently, you might notice them expanding to offer more products. But this usually results in spending more time searching through the maze trying to locate the sandwich wraps, no longer in the bread aisle.
Nowadays the stores have their shelves stocked with a variety of options, but I always purchase the same products because I never know what I’ll like or how to cook it. A friend recommended that I try HelloFresh, a meal-kit delivery service to save time.
While it’s been a huge time saver, the best part is I’m trying new foods and flavors and it feels like I have a curator walking me through the grocery store each week with a new shopping list.
HelloFresh sends pre-portioned ingredients to your door along with their new recipes each week, and all you have to do is cook the meals. I like the Classic Plan, which specializes in meat, fish and seasonal produce. They have lots of fun, delicious-sounding recipes to choose from, which is so much easier than searching for specific ingredients. The best part is that HelloFresh is change the way I eat by introducing me to new dishes that I would have never tried before. Plus, I’m spending less time shopping each week.
When my box arrives, every ingredient is clearly labeled with recipe cards and food neatly packed inside. There are always little packages with everything I need for each meal. These usually include small spice packets or little 3 oz. bottles of a special sauce. I love this because they’re sample sizes and the recipes tell me exactly what to do with these new flavors. No more searching endlessly for a ponzu sauce that I read about on Martha Stewart. (If for some reason I didn’t like the ponzu sauce, then I won’t find the full bottle in the back my fridge 8 months from now.) It’s easy and I’ve been so excited to try out the new recipes. I love to cook and most meals only take 30-45 minutes.
Most recently I cooked the Honey-Glazed Pork Tenderloin. I usually shy away from pork because I always manage to overcook it, but looking over the recipe, it seemed like it wouldn’t be too difficult. There were only a few ingredients, too, which made the prepping process easy for me. I sauteed the green beans, roasted up some sweet potatoes, and pan seared the pork.
The instructions were simple and timed exactly right. The pork ended up coming out perfectly tender, and the honey glaze drizzle provided the sweet touch that goes so well with pork. It was a great meal, and something I never would have attempted without a tried and true recipe.
It’s been a few months and every meal I’ve had so far has been delicious. I still go to the grocery store for our weekly needs and the weeks when we skip HelloFresh, but I spend less time wandering the aisles.
While HelloFresh has proven to be a super time-saver, what I didn’t expect was that it would make dinners fun for me. I enjoy cooking and eating the meals I’m making. And it really feels like there’s a friend on the other end helping me navigate the variety of options for food and make suggestions based on what I will like.
I no longer rotate my usual options from my weekly shopping list and instead I try something new. It’s such a relief to know that a delicious, home-cooked dinner can be less than an hour away, and I don’t have to think twice about it.
