Our pets are our best friends, and great snugglers for all kinds of movie-watching. (Who said you can’t snuggle with your pet fish?) Whatever kind of animal (or stuffed animal) you have, we don’t think they’re too into human films, so here’s something especially for them. Enjoy these animal-centric films and have a wild time.
1. Animal Farm (1954)
Ah, animals and communism go so well together, don’t they? This film is the animated adaptation of George Orwell’s famous novel. We can’t tell the men from the pigs on this one. Your dog might not understand the complexity of the Russian Revolution of 1917, but, give him the benefit of the doubt.
2. Where The Red Fern Grows (1974)
Based on the heartwarming and sad 1961 novel by Wilson Rawis, this film tells the tale of a boy who trains two Redbone Coonhound hunting dogs. It’s not just a children’s story.
3. The Adventures of Milo and Otis (1986)
The film about two animals on a Japanese farm — Milo, an orange tabby, and Otis, a pug — was originally released in Japan. In 1989, it was released in English. The duo have some amazing adventures as they overcome hardships on one wild journey.
4. The AristoCats (1970)
These are some fancy felines. When their new inheritance is threatened by their owner’s butler, the cats must find their way back home, and back to justice.
5. The Lion King (1994)
Does Simba have what it takes to follow his kind father’s legacy? With obstacles like the intimidating Scar and the silly hyenas, it’s a long road to be king. But we always say, hakuna matata.
6. Babe (1995)
Who says a pig can’t herd sheep? Babe was one lucky duckling (well, pig) when he got saved from the slaughter at a county fair to be trained as the new herder on campus.
7. Stuart Little (1999)
Based on E.B. White’s charming book, this film tells the story of a family who adopts a mouse as a son. It doesn’t go over too well with the family’s pet cat.
8. Charlotte’s Web (2006)
This film adaptation is also based on the novel of E.B. White. Wilbur, Templeton, Charlotte — the whole gang is involved in a plan to save Wilbur from being dinner at the end of the season.
9. Free Willy (1993)
A whale is threatened to be killed by his aquarium owners and only a little boy’s love is enough to stop it.
10. Lassie (1994)
This is the updated Lassie. Still a great dog. Still the great story that’s been enchanting generations. Would your dog save you from a well?
11. Finding Nemo (2003)
A baby clownfish is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and it takes a whole ocean to find him, including the lovable Dory, who’s now the star of her own spin-off, Finding Dory.
12. Black Beauty (1994)
Based on the novel by Anna Sewell, Black Beauty tells the story of a horse’s journey through life.
13. War Horse (2011)
This is one tough pony. It takes a warrior to get through the horrors of World War I.
14. Marley and Me (2008)
Taking care of a dog is a lot of work, but when it’s as cute as Marley, it’s not so bad.
15. A Bug’s Life (1998)
An ant tries to save his colony with the help of some pretty squishy bugs. Together they form a formidable team. (It’s Kevin Spacey in his finest role.)
16. March of the Penguins (2005)
Did someone say, “mating season”? We did. That’s what happens every March, when penguins take their march to start new families.
If your pet makes it through the whole movie without making a peep or a mess, we think some treats are in order! We hope you enjoyed these undomesticated films as much as we (and our pets) do!
