Why Is Copenhagen The “Slow Ageing” Capital Of Europe?

Danish women are praised as of late for looking much younger than their actual age. In fact, a recent study proves that Copenhagen is the slowest aging city in Europe. While many people chalk this up to good ol’ genetics, can environmental factors also be at play here? Well, according to research, genetics usually only plays a 15% role in our aging process. The other 85% can be determined by lifestyle factors.

So, while we all know SPF and drinking enough water is crucial for keeping us youthful looking, what exactly is Copenhagen’s secret? Are the citizens of Denmark secretly hoarding decrepit portraits of their true selves in their attics? Or, more likely, are there day-to-day habits in this part of Europe that contribute to its people looking sprightlier than ever? Here’s where we can take their lead in order to maintain or regain that cherubic glow of youth.

Copenhagen Is One Of The Least Stressful Places On The Planet

Copenhagen’s cultural norms contribute to its stress-free environment. When you Google a list of the most laid back places in the world, Denmark is bound to show up in the top 5. Yet for those of us who’ve been forced into America’s grind culture, we truly know how much stress can contribute to the aging process. For instance, staying up all night to work on that one project or spending hours at the office day after day can lead to bags under the eyes — that always somehow seem to magically disappear on the weekends.

With this in mind, it’s pretty amazing how much a stress-free lifestyle can keep you looking 10 years younger. And although it’s basically impossible for most of us in the US to just kick back like they do in Copenhagen, there are several steps we can take to de-stress after a long day at work, so we can reap some of the Green City’s beauty benefits.

By simply getting 7-8 hours of sleep, lolling about in a warm bubble bath, and using essential oils after a grueling work day, we leave behind all the stress at the office so we can truly unwind. Although it doesn’t sound like much, prioritizing your stress-reduction can be enough to help get the job done.

So, let’s dive into Copenhagen’s famous lifestyle factors.

Choose A Wholesome Diet Over Processed Junk

Another thing to admire about Copenhagen is that the majority of its citizens prioritize organic and paleo-friendly meals over the processed garbage Americans wolf down. That means choosing lean meats and fish with cooked veggies and fruits over flavorless microwaved nuggets.

Concentrate on holistic foods over cardboard-like “food” that comes out of a box or a can, you’ll be able to keep the wrinkles at bay for years to come.

Plus, a clean and healthy diet will give you a natural glow that no bottle, cream, or injection can replace. Honestly, what do you have to lose?

Don’t Forget To Exercise

Another huge part of Copenhagen’s culture is bike riding in order to get to and fro. Unfortunately, here in the US, many of us neglect any form of exercise all-together. If we want to get somewhere, we hop in our cars or Ubers.

But what if I told you physical fitness plays a dramatic role in our overall aging process? According to a study, those who exercise regularly tend to look — and feel — decades younger than their actual age. (Excuse me while I go hop on my Peloton!)

Reconnect With Nature

Due to our tech-based lifestyles, most of us are spending less and less time in the great outdoors. The natural world can have wonderful healing properties for our outer and inner health.

In Copenhagen, getting outdoors is a natural part of the culture. So go on that morning jog around the neighborhood or take a spin on your bike. It’s the perfect way to reconnect with the world and “touch grass.”

Don’t Overdo The Skin Products

I’ll be honest, y’all. I had to learn this lesson the hard way. While my skin has improved dramatically through my 20s. I’ve reached a point where zits are a rarity. But I was so shocked this week when I broke out that I had a mini meltdown. My skin hasn’t looked this bad since my teenage years, and I’m just starting to realize the likely culprit: my overuse of products.

I’ve been going way too hard on the cleansers, toners, and exfoliators, piling on serums, face wipes, and Korean face masks—all of which have been way too harsh on my skin. My poor face needs a break from this chemical overload. So I decided to keep it simple—just a gentle cleanse with a cloth and no products at all. And you know what? My skin has already calmed down tremendously in less than 24 hours.

Less is so much more when it comes to skin care. I’ll never overdo it with the products again. In Copenhagen, this is a common approach, where simple is always better.

Washing your face and dabbing it with a dry cloth can be enough, along with using a moisturizer and cleanser tailored to your individual needs. No need to overdo it!

So. Tell me. Which aspects of Copenhagen’s lifestyle will you incorporate into your anti-aging routine?
