The no-makeup makeup look can elude some of us. It seems so simple, but it is such a struggle to achieve perfectly. If anyone knows how to do it impeccably, it’s beauty guru celebs like Hailey Bieber and Alex Consani. And they’ve been gracious enough to share their secrets and tricks with us.
Learn how to do an I-woke-up-like-this makeup routine with superstar celebs like Hailey, Alex, Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner, and Bella Hadid!
Hailey Bieber: The Princess of Prep
“I just love the routine of skincare… the ritual, the commitment.”
Hailey Bieber’s makeup looks are lovely, but it’s her skincare and prep tips that help us take our no-makeup game to the next level. She always prioritizes her skincare because that’s the secret to creating gorgeous natural looks. If your skin is already golden, makeup is just the icing on the cake.
She recommends starting with the Environ Skin EssentiA Moisturizing Toner, a moisturizing toner that gives your skin that fresh feeling, which will help makeup sit better. She also uses her own brand’s Rhode Peptide Glazing Fluid, which brightens skin for a dewy appearance. Her Rhode Barrier Restore Cream adds a rich layer, protecting your face while keeping it smooth and hydrated.
She wraps up the prep part of her routine with Dieux Skin Forever Eye Masks to get rid of those dark circles (she doesn’t have any) and under-eye bags (she doesn’t have those either). Her eyes may look well-rested, but perhaps it’s only due to these fab eye masks.
One extra secret she shares is to apply foundation with your hands. It sounds like blasphemy for us beauty blender customers, but Hailey swears it gives you that more natural, seamless finish. Just make sure your hands are clean!
Alex Consani: Flawless Foundation
“Match your routine to your face.”
Alex Consani taught us all about reverse contouring. So naturally, we owe her all our firstborns. Traditional contouring uses dark shades to create an angular, sculpted look. Reverse contouring uses light shades instead, which brightens and uplifts for a daintier, breezier appearance.
Both Alex, Hailey, and other radiant celebs recommend Chanel Foundation, so if you can swing the $65-70 price tag, do it. If not, one of our favorite dupes is the CoverGirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence Foundation.
Alex is known to go crazy with concealer, recommending you put it on and let it sit so the color sets in and lasts longer. So don’t blend it in too fast! She then uses concealer around her eyes and up toward her forehead for that reverse contour. Between the YSL Beauty Touche Éclat Concealer Pen, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, and Pat McGrath Labs Sublime Perfection Blurring Under Eye Powder that she uses, her skin has no choice but to look flawless.
She rounds out the look by dabbing Rhode Pocket Blush along the sides of her face, avoiding the area directly next to the eyes.
Selena Gomez: Easy on the Eyes
“We love a good brow.”
Selena is another queen of the relaxed, no-makeup look, and we’re turning to her to get those easy on the eyes, easygoing eyes. Selena keeps her eye looks soft, highlighting her natural beauty, and that starts with giving your brows a little TLC.
She uses the Rare Beauty Brow Harmony Shape and Fill Duo in Light Brown, brushing out the brows in an upward motion before applying any color. This fluffs them up for a perfectly imperfect appearance that secures her organic vibe. Then, she fills in her brows with a light touch. If you have super light brows, you can be more generous with the color.
Selena claims she’s not a big fan of mascara and hates it when it flakes off her lashes. She uses her own brand’s Perfect Strokes Universal Volumizing Mascara. But we also recommend the CoverGirl Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara (which happens to be what Bella Hadid uses).
The key to that effortless look is to do your top lashes only and leave the bottom lashes bare. Bottom-lash mascara is a dead giveaway that you’ve glammed up, so keep it sneaky and stay on top. And if your eyelashes aren’t black, be sure to find a brown mascara that matches!
Kendall Jenner: Rosy and Alive
“I’m not a professional, guys!”
We love following Kendall’s makeup tips because she openly admits that she’s not a pro, so her routines are totally relatable. And, frankly, adorable to watch. For this particular video, she aims for a “Spring French Girl” aesthetic, which is more or less natural-looking, except for her pièce de résistance red lipstick.
It’s the little things that make her look stand out. She dabs rosy pink blush all over her upper cheeks and under her eyes, creating a dramatic, blushing look that, according to her, makes her feel alive. And she’s right — that pop of blush brings the look to life.
Kendall reminds us that her makeup skills are still at the amateur level as she starts her eyeshadow. She sticks with cozy brown tones, which are ideal for a no-makeup look. Apply it to the entire lid and under the eyebrow softly, finishing with a few dabs beneath your bottom lashes. While we love a glittery eyeshadow, matte is the way to go for an au naturel style.
For the last part of Kendall’s routine we have to talk about the eyelash curler. If you, like Selena, are not a mascara lover, simply curl and call it a day. We consider this essential if you want a truly exquisite no-makeup look. After all, using a curler is officially a makeup-free task.
Bella Hadid: Glossy in Five Minutes or Less
“Everyday, just trying to figure it out.”
Bella was kind enough to give us a rundown of her 3-5-minute beauty routine, all while sitting in her car. After all, she’s had years to nail the model off-duty vibe. She makes this natural, no-makeup look seem easy, and the end result is a stunning Scandi Girl aesthetic.
By wielding her highlighter like a pro, Bells elevates the no-makeup look, dotting it on her cheekbones and swooping it down her nose to create a slightly contoured look that’s bright and dewy.
But Bella’s lips are the real star here. She uses an espresso lip liner, like this Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner, and then brings the shine with the glossiest of lip glosses. Sadly, the one she’s used in the past is discontinued, but we recommend the FENTY BEAUTY Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer or e.l.f. Glow Reviver Lip Oil.
The liner, combined with the gloss, creates a lustrous yet understated look that can work for everyday wear.
Down-to-Earth Earthy Looks
Watching these celebs do something as simple as a no-makeup makeup routine is an assuring reminder that makeup is a personal journey and you can sometimes stumble. From Bella doing a quick session in her car to Kendall struggling with her eyeshadow, we love how humble these ladies are.
They emphasize that it’s important you do your makeup for your face, so what works for them might not work for you. Mastering the no-makeup style requires you to get to know your features and learn how to accentuate them. And those can change daily. Perhaps your eyes are puffier on Mondays, or your skin is particularly dehydrated one day. Don’t be afraid to adjust your routine for the day and pick and choose what tips and tricks work for you!
