Healthy Hair Is Hot: Start Oiling Your Locks

Oiling your hair and scalp can give you longer, shinier hair. Here's how

Something about that hair-dying-phase during lockdown had everyone frying their hair due to the endless boredom.

I can’t blame them, either. I, too, fell victim to bleaching my entire head for months. The Dark Ages are over and I’m moving on with my head high and my locks strong.

When I finally woke up from my blonde fever dream, I’d heavily damaged my hair and chemically burnt my scalp from continual bleaching. Even though I dyed my hair brown again, I had six months of recovery for my dry, damaged ends ahead of me. So I was willing to try anything.

Besides moisture masks multiple times a week, I learned that oiling your hair can save your ends and improve shine. There are also hair oils specifically for exfoliating and moisturizing those dry patches on your scalp…these hair oils are now my best-best friends.

Let’s get into the whole philosophy of hair oiling and why it may help your hair.

Scalp Oils

The scalp is where you can prevent dandruff and stimulate growth. As the cold weather arrives, your entire body gets dry, including your scalp. This is where dandruff comes into play.

By massaging oil directly to your scalp in circular motions, you can moisturize the scalp and stimulate hair growth. According to Healthline, if you have dry and frizzy hair, leaving the oil on overnight and showering it off in the morning will benefit your hair the most.

My personal favorites are Fable & Mane HoliRoots and JVN Pre-Wash Oil which are both made with clean ingredients and target dry spots on the scalp. For hair growth, I use Wild Growth Hair Oil once a week and my hair has grown six inches in a year.

Hair Oils

By oiling your lengths and ends, you’re locking in moisture and fighting frizz. Hair oils can also serve as heat protectants, which can save your split ends in the long run. I like using what I call an Oil Cocktail, or multiple oils to make my hair moisturized and glossy.

In my opinion, there are two types of hair-oiling: the overnight treatment and the everyday post-shower. The overnight treatment can involve pouring coconut oil on your scalp and working through your hair to strengthen and deep condition. Simply keep your hair in a cap while you sleep, then shampoo and condition as usual.

Then, there’s the consistent hair oiling during your regular hair routine. Post-shower, I like to use a few different oils to fight frizz and keep my hair healthy. Verb Ghost Oil, Biosilk Oil, and Olaplex No. 7 are my oils of choice that truly give me hair-health, softness, and shine.

What Are You Waiting For?

Oiling your hair can provide that much-needed boost to go from dry and damaged to luscious and healthy. Keeping both your scalp and ends hydrated during the dreaded dry-season is incredibly important for your hair’s progress.
