Storytime: I was walking through the mean streets of Los Angeles when the unimaginable happened: a random stranger turned to me and said I wasn’t a “girl’s girl.”

If you know, you know this is an insult of unimaginable proportions. After all, 2023 was the year of the girl. With Barbie, Girl Math, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce, being a girl has never been cooler — no matter how you express yourself. And being a girl’s girl is crucial.

In my defense: I was accosted with this accusation due to a complete misunderstanding. My friends talked me down, affirming to me that I am in fact, a girl’s girl. But I’ve been on edge about it ever since. Which is why I’m going all out for Galentine’s Day.

What is Galentine’s Day?

Forget February 14th. Even if you’re sickeningly in love, there’s no way to make Valentine’s Day interesting anymore. Galentine’s Day, which falls on February 13th, is where it’s at.

It’s become so ubiquitous that some people don’t know where it started: the television show “Parks and Recreation.” Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope coined the term to describe a day of ladies celebrating ladies — and girls being girls’ girls.

What is the point of Galentine’s Day?

Studies show that relationships with female friends form some of the most resilient connections — not only contributing to emotional well-being but also playing a pivotal role in fostering personal growth and resilience. By having real, open, female friendships, women are more empowered to start businesses, leave unhealthy situations, and even get paid more. It’s easier to ask for a raise with your friends cheering you on. According to research, women with strong social connections can even live longer, have lower stress levels, and experience greater overall happiness. So whatever mischief you get up to this weekend, it will balance itself out.

Galentine’s Day is also a reminder not to neglect the women in your life when you have a relationship. Whatever the status of your relationship or the gender of your SO, your best girls will be the ones helping you through all your major milestones. You don’t want to wake up one day and realize you have no more female friends. Like Barbie in her namesake movie, Galentine’s Day is about choosing a slumber party with the other Barbies over a night with Ken.

Is Galentine’s Day only for singles?

Galentine’s Day is certainly not exclusive to singles; it’s a celebration for all women, regardless of their relationship status. While Valentine’s Day traditionally emphasizes romantic relationships, Galentine’s Day expands the scope of love to include platonic bonds. It’s also a little less of a marketing ploy than Valentine’s Day.

In fact, Galentine’s Day can be a particularly uplifting and empowering experience for women in romantic relationships. It offers a chance to step away from the commercialized aspects of Valentine’s Day and focus on the depth and strength of female friendships. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the diverse connections that keep you going.

How To Celebrate Galentine’s Day

The sky is the limit when it comes to Galentine’s Day ideas. And when it comes to celebrating my ladies, I’m willing to go all out. The best way to decide how to celebrate Galentine’s day is to make it personal. Just like Valentine’s Day, you want to show your people love the way they receive it. So, if you have a cozy, chill friend group, maybe now is not the time to go out all night.

Besties Who Brunch:

One popular way to celebrate Galentine’s Day is by organizing a brunch. It’s an opportunity to indulge in delicious food, share laughter, and revel in each other’s company. Choose a cozy spot or host a potluck brunch at home, where everyone can contribute their favorite dishes. Mimosa toasts, heartfelt conversations, and digital camera pics here you come.

Spa Day or Pampering Session:

Another way to celebrate is by pampering yourself with a spa day. Whether it’s booking a spa retreat, getting professional massages, or DIY spa treatments at home, indulging in relaxation fosters a sense of well-being and camaraderie. It’s a chance to unwind, share beauty tips, and create a space for self-care.

Schedule a Staycation:

This is my plan of action. Stay in a trendy hotel in a trendy area with your squad. Go to all the coolest new places you haven’t had time for, then get cozy in hotel robes to close out the night.

Do a Book Exchange:

Create a virtual book exchange with your friends, sending each other your favorite reads or that one series you’ve been begging them to finally get to. Take a cue from Seen Library and wrap the books, then write descriptions so you can exchange them without judging by their cover.

Galentine’s Gift Ideas

It’s never too late to spoil your friends. Consider exchanging thoughtful gifts that symbolize your appreciation for each other. It could be personalized items, a favorite book, or something that reflects a shared memory. The essence is in the sentiment behind the gift, acknowledging the unique qualities that make each friendship special.
